Luke 22:10-12
He replied, “As soon as you enter Jerusalem, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.” |
The man carrying water met the disciples and led them to the prepared house where "they found things just as Jesus had told them" (Mark 14:16). Until recently when reading this story, the disciples’ obedience had always come to mind.. However, this time I became aware that, before the disciples could be obedient in following him to the room that was prepared, the owner of the house had to be obedient in preparing it!
Somewhere along the way, the Lord told the homeowner to prepare a room in his house. This man made a conscious choice to not only listen to what he was being told, but also to obey the command. I began to wonder what was going through the owner’s mind as he prepared a room for people he had never met. Did he know that he was preparing a table for the King of kings? Was he aware that the water drawn at the well that day was going to be used by the Lord himself to wash the disciples’ feet? (John 13:1-17) He was preparing a room, but God was preparing hearts!
I began to wonder, “How many times has God asked me to make room for Him in the house of my heart only to find that I conveniently didn’t answer or perhaps even open the spiritual door?"
The place was prepared because the man was willing! One of the greatest events of all humanity was about to take place in his home. I couldn’t help but imagine that while the owner of the home served Jesus and his disciples, Jesus casually looking towards and addressing the owner when He said to everyone gathered around the table, “I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom" (Matthew 26:29). The man that served the last supper on Earth would one day sit at the feast in Heaven.
Perhaps Jesus is still speaking to many of us today and lovingly asking us to prepare and make room. He may not be looking for room in our house, but He is certainly looking for room in our hearts! If we will prepare the table, He is faithful to provide the meal!
Father, thank you for the privilege to serve you! Thank you for your faithful provision and your desire to dine and dwell in the house of our heart. Help us to become more like you in all that we say and in everything we do. We love you Lord. Amen.
