Mark 12:41-44
41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. 43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.” |
I wonder what this would look like today? Most of us are blessed beyond measure. We give out of abundance, yet there are some who, even today, give out of little. Does the principle of giving apply only to money? Matthew 22:37 says to, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind."
Do we give Him our all when the offering plate of life is passed before us each day? This widow did. Jesus said, "she has given everything she had to live on" (vs 44). I imagine that included her worries, burdens, and struggles too! She gave her two copper coins along with her troubles. Surely her pockets were not the only thing that was lighter as she walked home that day. Perhaps she had come to rest in the truth that the Lord has also revealed to His birds.
Matthew 6:26-27
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
He is the faithful Provider of all our needs! This woman was worldy poor but spiritually rich! She walked without fear of tomorrow. She knew her house would be taken care of, because she knew who was over her house! She was a woman of great worth! She was a widow of a man, but a bride of the King! She was known by Jesus and even the disciples for her noble character (vs 43) Yes, she was surely praised at the city gates (Proverbs 31:31).
Father, help us to look to You in everything and in every circumstance! Help us to give abundantly to You in every area of our lives ― our time, our money, and our gifts. Help us to become less, so that You continually become more. In Jesus mighty name we pray, Amen!
