Proverbs 8:2-3 (NLT)
2 On the hilltop along the road, she takes her stand at the crossroads. 3 By the gates at the entrance to the town, on the road leading in, she cries aloud.
As soon as I read these two verses, an old song came to mind and I began to envision railroad tracks in a rural country setting. I began thinking of a narrow, two lane road with barely visible street lines, where a person once stood to move the switch that changed the direction of the tracks when trains approached. A two hundred pound man, a three foot lever, a few seconds, and less energy than it takes to crank a lawn mower, could set the course of a train that weighs hundreds of thousands of pounds and indirectly move it hundreds of miles.
I saw this verse from a different perspective this time as I read it. Wisdom took her stance both times in these verses at a potential life change or a “choice". She took her stand at the crossroads or a “fork" in the road, and also cried out at the entrance to the town. I began to think about how every road that leads into a city is also a road that leads out of a city. Wisdom was shouting on the road that leads into the town of God’s presence. God’s wisdom calls out to us, encourages us, and directs us back to His house. His peace and protection stand along the roadside to guide us to His love. When we begin to walk away, wisdom cries out, “Don’t go, don’t leave, you are heading in the wrong direction.”
Wisdom is given to help protect us, guide us, direct us, and assist us along the way. Then the question that came to mind was, "Are we listening?" Do we continue to drive by, paying “her” no attention, just as we have done so many times before with the person standing on the busy street corner? Do we even notice her? And if we do, do we take the time to roll down the window and ask for directions when we get that internal nudge? Do we listen to that gentle voice that is reminding us we have taken a wrong turn and have veered off course? Wisdom cries out to us while we travel down the road of life. However, it is hard to hear the voice of Truth when jamming out to the "music" of the world. Wisdom comes from the Lord!
Proverbs 2:6 (NLT)
For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Father,
Give us the ears to hear Your voice. Help us to become wise in Your ways and to avoid the trap of walking in the foolish ways of the world. Help us to be unafraid, unashamed, and boldly speak of Your Truth. Thank You for being there for us every second of our life! Thank You for loving us enough to go before us and taking the time to stand at the crossroads in our lives long before we get to them. Thank You for Your wisdom that cries out to us. Help us to put the world on mute, so we can tune into Your will and sing our song of praise! We love You Lord! Amen.
