Psalm 91:1-7 (NLT)
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. 3 For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. 4 He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. 5 Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. 6 Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. 7 Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. |
Fear can be such a powerful and debilitating force if it is not defused with the Word of God! A couple of years ago I was scheduled to fly back home during the height of the Ebola virus outbreak. Of all places, my layover was in Dallas where there had been 2 confirmed cases. Fear is not something I typically struggle with, but this time it was different. The more I thought about Ebola and listened to the news, I felt fear creeping in. I remember contemplating if I should change flights or rent a car to get back home. It was in that moment that I realized fear was no longer just creeping in; it had now made itself at home in my mind.
I began praying and asking the Lord for His guidance. "Lord, I am scared. I am not sure what to do. Do I fly home? Do I change my plans? I need Your help." I didn't hear Him give me any specific direction after I initially prayed, but I continued to share my thoughts and feelings with Him over the next 24-48 hours. Somewhere during that time period, I came to conclusion that I didn't need to make any changes to my initial plans. Peace began to once again make its rightful claim to the place that fear had previously stolen.
On the way to airport the Lord provided Psalm 91 through a friend that posted on social media. As I read it, Truth completely triumphed fear! I began to step on each word as I spoke them.. It was almost like walking up a flight of stairs. By the time I had reached the top, the battle was won and fear was under my feet! I walked victoriously into the airport that day!
Once inside, fear could literally be seen on everyone's faces. It appeared as if the airport was a leper. Everyone was scared to touch anything and even a casual cough was enough to make people scatter like flies.
I fearlessly watched the fearful in indescribable peace! I was now able to stand on a promise that I was previously only able to read. I knew "He alone is my refuge, my place of safety, He is my God and I trust Him. He will rescue [me] from every trap and protect [me] from deadly disease. (vs 2-3)" "His faithful promises are [my] armor and protection. (vs 4)" Even if a thousand people had Ebola beside me, or if there were ten thousand that ended up dying around me, my God is more than capable and able to protect me! Ebola is a name, and the name of Jesus is above every name!
Father,
Thank you for being King of kings and Lord of lords! Thank You for Your perfect love that expels all fear! Thank You for each and every one of Your faithful promises! Thank You for taking the time to teach them to us. Help us to stand on them! Help us to walk in the authority You have given us - unafraid, unashamed, boldly and confidently proclaiming Your Good News to the corners of the Earth. We love you Lord. Amen.
