Luke 10:38-40 (NLT)
38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.40 But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me. |
The story of Mary and Martha took on new perspective when I recently read it again. I remembered the story as being one that told how one sister did the listening and the other sister was focused on the cooking. However, this time when I read it there was a phrase that continued to run through my mind – “Martha open the door but Mary stayed at His feet.
Martha opened the door and let Him in, but then became quickly distracted by the “busyness” that was also calling her name. This busyness had good intentions, after all, it was done to please the Lord. She longed to serve him but it wasn't her hands the Lord wanted this day – It was her heart! She had gotten so caught up on feeding the Lord, she lost sight of the fact that He was actually there to feed (teach) her! Martha opened the door and let him in, but it was Mary who intentionally chose to stay in His presence once He was there.
Luke 10:41-42
41 But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Mary had chosen the “one thing” that really mattered. I couldn’t help but think about how life's "kitchen" can sometimes be a distraction. About this time Proverbs 17:1 came to mind.
Proverbs 17:1
Better a dry crust eaten in peace than a house filled with feasting—and conflict.
Jesus is the Prince of Peace! Even a crust eaten with the King, is certain to be fine dining and a full course meal!
Father,
Help us to see through your eyes and not out own! Thank you for knocking on the door of our hearts! Lord we welcome you in and thank you for taking the time to teach us, speak to us, and transform us! Empower us Lord to do your will! Help us not become distracted by the business that life offers but remember it in your presence and at the foot of the cross where we find our freedom and source of strength. We love you, honor you, and praise you – our great King! Amen.
